Extremely wealthy people are not like all of us. They buy and sell high-end properties like we buy shoes. And Aileen Getty, a scion of the oil family, is a prime example. To wit: In June 2019, she bought a stunning townhouse in New York’s West Village from venture capitalist Adam Dell for $19 million. Now, just three years later, the serial buyer and seller are off to new pastures, asking $25 million for the jaw-dropping home.
Listed with Carl Gambino of Compass, the townhouse is beautifully situated, on a cobbled street that is neither too west nor too east. It is close to the trendy Meatpacking District, Hudson River Park, and all of Greenwich Village’s fantastic shops and restaurants.
Built in 1910, the 20-foot-wide townhouse has five bedrooms and ten bathrooms. It was completely refurbished by Dell, including all new mechanical systems, so Ms. Getty, or her decorator, only had to add her own personal touch. And you know, when you’re talking about a Getty, the personal touches will be unique and upscale. In addition to the artwork, eye candy includes the 1940s Fritz Hansen teddy bear chair as well as the Samarkind Suzani textile that hangs behind a bed in one of the guest bedrooms.
With two seating areas, the living room sports its original wood-burning marble fireplace, while the eat-in kitchen, which eschews the current trend for a minimalist, morgue-like look, features a very handsome stone snack bar. island and two bay windows. refrigerators. Steel glass doors lead to a vine-draped balcony for al fresco dining.
There is an en-suite guest bedroom and a small gym downstairs, as well as a state-of-the-art home cinema which spills out into a stone-paved rear garden shrouded in greenery. Encompassing the entire third floor, the master bedroom has tons of storage space — two walk-ins and a walk-in closet lined with cabinets — as well as a wood-burning fireplace and marble soaking tub that showcases a marble vanity. two-sink vintage.
In addition to the serene rear garden and dining balcony, there is a terrace off the master bedroom and a landscaped roof terrace with a six-person hot tub.
This is, of course, just one of Mrs. Getty’s homes. Currently on the West Coast, she resides in Los Feliz, in a mid-century home she purchased from Maroon 5’s James Valentine a few years ago. Last year she sold a house in Malibu, which she bought from James Perse and sold to New York heiress Nicole Ross Eloff, and before that she owned a large resort in the Hollywood Hills, which she bought from a Walmart heiress and sold to Katy. Pear. (Perry has since sold this place to Michael Chow, owner of the Mr. Chow chain of restaurants, who still owns it.)
Thinking of a new pair of shoes for fall? Mrs. Getty is probably planning her last home purchase. Stay tuned.
