Aston Villa interested in Josh Doig

Premier League side Aston Villa are keeping a close eye on promising Hibernian starlet Josh Doig.

According to Daily mailPremier League side Aston Villa is keeping a close eye on Scottish starlet Josh Doig.

The 19-year-old rose through the ranks at Heart of Midlothian before moving to Hibernian in 2019. He signed a contract with the Scottish squad until 2023 and was on loan at Queen’s Park, league two.

Doig was promoted to Hibernian’s senior squad ahead of the 2020 season and has since enjoyed a strong outing in his first squad. His performances caught the attention of the Premier League and Scottish Premiership giants Celtic teams.

Mainly left-back, he can also play center and left midfield if needed. This versatility should be very useful for the future. Aston Villa, for their part, is a club that can benefit from such a player.

In recent weeks, Steven Gerrard’s team have seen their performance improve as they gain distance between themselves and the relegation zone. The Villans fell to a 2-1 loss to Brentford and that loss saw them miss an opportunity to move up to the top half of the table.

One of the main weaknesses of the Villa squad that night was at the left-back. Matt Targett looked cranky against Brentford and looked out of rhythm. He was completely overwhelmed by the opportunity, and the Midlands team would need an alternative to him in their squad.

Doig is not yet ready to establish himself as the Premier League’s first player. He still has some way to go before reaching the required level. But Gerrard has already shown his ability to train young talent for the Rangers, which bodes well for Doig.

A player who admires Arsenal star Kieran Tierney, Doig has all the potential to follow in the footsteps of the Gunners ace. He has already taken the first steps by winning the SFWA Young Player of the Year award 2020/21.

Along with Andy Robertson and Tierney, Scotland have produced two excellent left-backs in recent years. It remains to be seen whether Doig will soon be counted among their ranks. The Scotland youth international is certainly one to watch in the years to come. The question is whether he will strut around in a Villa jersey in the near future.
