Ian Wright digs Aston Villa transfer error with Arsenal comment

Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has been a standout performer for Mikel Arteta this season and would have been a transfer target for Aston Villa at the start of the year.

The 23-year-old has reportedly been on the radar of a number of Premier League clubs before joining Arsenal in the summer.

According to Standard Evening, Southampton and Villa both made offers last January in hopes of signing the versatile defender.

Instead, it looks like this summer Villa has chosen to call on the experience of Ashley Young, who may be in positions similar to Tomiyasu.

And Arsenal legend Wright has been singing the praises of the Japan international all season. Earlier in this campaign, Wright said, “Tomiyasu, I don’t think anyone passed him.

“He’s a very astute signing. He was magnificent,” said the player-turned-expert, before getting lyrical about his performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the North London Derby soon after.

“Hats off to Tomiyasu,” Wright added. “He’s great, something’s going on.”

Tomiyasu has been around since joining Arsenal this season, starting the club’s last 15 Premier League games.
