Aston Villa are in the hunt for Steven Gerrard’s replacement after sacking him on Thursday night.
The 42-year-old Villans’ tenure came to an end just after Villa’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at Fulham.
Villa have been linked with a number of names in recent days, but one seems to be above the rest.
Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim appears to be the Villans’ main managerial target.
And a report from Portugal highlighted how eager Villa were to land the 37-year-old.
To Bola – via sports witness – claim the Villa Park side will ‘insist’ on a deal with Amorim.
This despite the Villans being pushed back on their first attempt.
Villa is apparently trying to convince Amorim to accept a new challenge.
They also reportedly made it clear they weren’t put off by his €30m (£26m) release clause.
Villa are ‘crazy’ about Amorim and see him as ‘one of the best solutions’ to lead the team.
Therefore, they will “insist” on trying to land him.
Villa would see Amorim as an ambitious young manager with a bright future and want part of that to be at Villa Park.
However, the manager himself may need more conviction.
Amorim has already publicly cooled the rumors and isn’t ready to give up on Sporting.
He apparently wants to finish the season and then assess his options.
If that were the case, Villa would obviously have to look elsewhere.
Nonetheless, Villa ‘won’t give up’ on their bid to secure the five trophies coach.
