Tenants struggle to find apartments in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Apartment companies across Springfield are busy with units in high demand.

TLC Properties recently hired an additional 30 employees due to their general business.

Lance Lloyd of TLC Properties says of their more than 25 resorts, the majority of them are almost filled with waiting lists. He said an important factor is construction costs. There are fewer houses under construction, so more people are looking to rent. He said the owners were also selling their property and moving into apartments.

Lloyd says 25% of their tenants are students. If he could give any advice to those looking to rent, he says start now.

“If you are looking to relocate your student, the semester is approaching, so definitely start looking now,” Lloyd said. “If you are planning to move in August, September, you want to start at least three months in advance.

Emily Bottorf lives in Springfield, but works in Branson. Over the past several months, she has searched for apartments in Ozark, Nixa and elsewhere.

Bottorf said the majority of the apartments are full, but if they have any openings it’s out of his budget. She said an apartment required $ 600 with the request before you were even available to tour the complex. Bottorf said it was difficult to justify the price and location rather than finding a safe place to live.

“The apartments have signs posted on their buildings that say like now rental and stuff,” Bottorf said. “It’s like okay, no you don’t rent because you don’t have availability. Or if you rent, you charge everyone an arm and a leg or wait for the deposit in advance with the request before you even guarantee anyone an apartment.

Lloyd believes that as the cost of construction begins to drop, more and more tenants will be able to find openings with an apartment or house.
