Transfer wishlist named Aston Villa said they needed signatures in January

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is set to make his mark on the squad in the January transfer window as his new side seek a solid second half of the season.

Villa has been impressive under the former Liverpool captain, who took over from Dean Smith after being sacked after five consecutive Premier League defeats.

But the fans feel that Villa needs reinforcements to help them enjoy a strong second half.

And fans debated what exactly Gerrard needs when the club are free to do business again.

One supporter said: “Ginny Wijnaldum, Joe Gomez, Aaron Hickey, Oriol Romeu, Julián Álvarez are all screams to me. Which practically guarantees we won’t have any.”

Another added: “I think a new DM [defensive midfielder] will be the priority, but getting a first-class one in January is tough. We won’t be spending big in the short term. McKennie and Kamara are probably the best 2 available at no huge cost. Kamara from Rangers also mentioned, but not for me. A LB [left-back] to push Targett too. “

A third admitted: “LB, substitute goalie, possible DM too. Do you think we’ll end up with Rangers players too?”

And a fourth said: “A full-back, a DM and a striker.”

Villa have already been linked with a number of players ahead of the window opening, with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez among those the club would like.

Earlier today, new reports in Italy linked the club again with a move by Bologna defender Aaron Hickey while Oriel Romeu, who has previously been linked with Villa, is also said to be on their radar.

A move for Romeu has already been backed by former Villa striker Kevin Phillips who said: “I think Romeu would be a solid option for Villa,” he said.

“He reminds me a lot [Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg. He’s an 8 out of 10 every week, but he’ll never be that tree-pulling player. I wouldn’t say he ever stands out, but he does the bad side of the game – the tough, industrious side of things.

“Villa will know what they are getting. Romeu is an organizer and a leader. If Villa could get his services, it would be a smart deal. It gives you a platform to build and allows other more offensive players to play.

“The more I think about it, the more he reminds me of Hojbjerg. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was going and doing well at Villa.
