Jamie Carragher thinks Unai Emery would be an excellent nomination by Aston Villa for the vacant manager’s post, as he has been linked with the position since the departure of Steven Gerrard.

Jamie Carragher speaking on Monday Night Football:

“I think it would be a fantastic nomination. I’m a huge fan of Unai Emery. He’s had a lot of success with teams just below the top flight, almost battling against the biggest clubs.

“It didn’t go so well with him at Arsenal, but if you look at what he did at Villarreal – Europa League winners and you look at how far they have pushed Liverpool in the Champions League. He has Brilliant summer at Valencia, always getting them into the Champions League places.

“I don’t think he’s the type of manager for Barcelona and Real Madrid – and I’m not saying that disrespectfully – but for a Valencia and an Aston Villa and for clubs trying to compete with teams that have more money, he really organizes his teams and he’s a great coach.

“Maybe not for the biggest names on the planet but, for Aston Villa at the moment, I think it would be a great nomination.”
