With the start of the fall semester, Villa Maria College has delivered books and supplies to students at no additional cost apart from tuition fees. CollegeBoard estimates that this change saves students and their families an average of $ 1,240 in out-of-pocket expenses per year. The college started this effort to help make the school more affordable and easier to navigate for all students.
To make sure all students receive the art and design supplies they need, the college has partnered with Hyatt’s – All Things Creative, one of the nation’s leading art supply suppliers, located in Buffalo.
“When we thought about how we were going to get graphic and art supplies into the hands of our students, we didn’t have to look any further than our own hometown and Hyatt,” said Dr. Giordano , president of Villa Maria College. “Hyatt’s has an exceptional reputation for providing the best art supplies with excellent customer service, this was the perfect fit for us.”
Elizabeth Hyatt-Martin, Co-Owner of Hyatt’s – All Things Creative, said, “Since our founding in 1959, our business has really been built on sourcing and providing design professionals with the specialized tools they need. So today, being able to still help future professionals get the tools they need to start their training on the right foot is truly an essential mission for us. It was such a great experience working with the administration of Villa who went beyond the normal process to secure these supplies in advance and make the process transparent for their students. I think it really shows how much attention to detail they pay to making sure their students are ready to be successful from the start. “
JaVonntae Hill, a sophomore double major in Game Design and Animation, said, “Villa Maria College is really ahead of the game when it comes to student success. This is not my first university experience and compared to other colleges Villa Maria really goes above and beyond to ensure the success of its students. Eliminating the cost of textbooks and supplies is just another testament to Villa prioritizing education and achievement. You can truly count on everyone at Villa to put your education first.
Books and supplies are ordered for each student individually, based on what the instructor has indicated as needed. Since the start of the fall 2021 semester on August 30, college staff have been busy distributing textbooks and supplies to students at the Book Distribution Center, located in the center of the dining hall. Students only need their student ID or confirmation email to get their books and supplies.
Just weeks into the semester, the college’s most recent student success initiative has made a positive difference.
“The free books program had an immediate impact on students here at Villa Maria,” said Elizabeth Kerr, Director of Student Success. “Students are usually devastated when they learn that this significant and reimbursable cost is not passed on to them. In previous semesters, students resorted to sharing textbooks or getting the minimum number of supplies just to get by. Now they have immediate access to the manuals and supplies they need to get to work right away. Students and faculty are excited to start learning from day one, knowing that everyone has fair access to the materials. “
Lucy Waite, Director of Library Services, has been at the forefront of the college’s book distribution efforts. She agrees that the elimination of reimbursable fees has helped all students get the semester off to a good start.
“The students are so excited they don’t have to pay out of pocket for books and supplies now,” Waite said. “Some of them can’t even believe it – they ask if we’re sure they don’t. They don’t have to pay and are thrilled when we tell them it’s true. They can go ahead and start their classes immediately, without wasting the time they spent waiting for their financial aid or paycheck to be paid. And everyone can also participate in class activities right away; no one is left behind due to an inability to obtain course material. “
Despite the high cost of textbooks and supplies nationwide, Villa Maria College is the only college in western New York State to directly address this major challenge.
“The rising cost of textbooks, art supplies, medical supplies and more has proven to be a major obstacle to the success of our students,” said Giordano. “Students come to Villa Maria to prepare for a prosperous future and to hone their innate talents, without worrying about the ever increasing cost of books and supplies. Incorporating these costs directly into tuition fees allows our students to focus on achieving their goals and finding their paths instead of worrying about paying for textbooks or looking for the best deal. .
Dr Ryan Hartnett, Vice President of Academic Affairs of Villa Maria, said: “Supporting our students in all facets, personal and academic, has always been Villa Maria’s top priority.
“Many books will be offered electronically and will be delivered seamlessly to students via D2L, Villa Maria’s learning management system. We will make arrangements to meet the needs of any student who needs a specialty textbook or specific accommodation.
