Winnipeg Transit driver taken to hospital after bus crash in Osborne Village building

A Winnipeg Transit bus collided with a three-story apartment building in the village of Osborne on Thursday afternoon, and the driver was taken to hospital, police say.

A bus was seen crashing into the building on River Avenue between Nassau Street North and Wilmot Place.

Winnipeg Police Cadets block traffic on the Nassau Street one-way road so traffic cannot get to where the road turns into Wellington Crescent.

A blue sedan and a white SUV also appear to have been badly damaged in the crash.

Winnipeg police say the bus driver was taken to hospital in stable condition. It is not known if anyone else was on the bus at the time of the accident.

CBC News has requested more information from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and is awaiting a response.

Karen Asher witnessed the aftermath of the crash around 2pm and saw paramedics tending to what she says was the driver. She did not see any passengers.

“I immediately heard a scream and crash and was shocked to see a bus had crashed into the heritage building right in front of me,” she said.

Asher has lived in the area for more than 20 years and says there are frequent collisions at the corner where River Avenue turns into Wellington Crescent.
